Even at three years old, children can be introduced to the concepts behind computer coding. When you add an engaging story-book and a bit of imagination, the sky's the limit.
We use the charming Cubetto robot to introduce coding without a screen. Children learn about sequencing (events and instructions), direction and distance, commands and even functional loops. They explore the language, characters and settings of the chosen story, and translate these into the 2D movements of the robot on a colourful mat.
By working in a small group, they develop their speaking and listening skills, and practise collaborating and taking turns.
The first session introduces the robot and demonstrates how we give him instructions. Optionally, we use a carefully-chosen story book, to engage the children and give a context for the activity.
From this point on, the learning is led by the children, who will discover how Cubetto moves and how we tell him what we'd like him to do. The small group size ensures that everyone has plenty of opportunities for hands-on fun and investigation.
The workshops contribute towards all of the areas of learning and development in the early years foundation stage (EYFS).
This will help prepare your child for their first year in school. The EYFS areas are:
By coming to more than one session, your child can follow up their learning at home, creating their own story mat, and sharing it at a future workshop.
We cover a range of themes and stories, with a new ones being added all the time.
